La Mancha is a natural plateau of central Spain, which has no limits, except historical and idiosyncratic. Cervantes and other Spanish folklorists writers have described its inhabitants, the “manchegos”, as serious, elusive and grumpy, but Encarna, the woman who shamelessly approached me to tell a short but sad story about the house I photograph, she is also “manchega” and I get bewildered with her kindness and gentleness. So I began a round of visits in the villages of La Mancha and investigated on them and their history personally, attracted not only by their voluntary autodiscrimination and their reputation of elusive, but also by their unknown caring nature and the pride for their traditions. Soon, I went into their routines and they told me stories of their own lives, so I determined to make a phototography work an a book of chronicles of my experiences with them as an outsider.
The project Navahermosa was born after two years and a half of working on my first foray into these villages, where I found enigma, nostalgia and history, but also where I discovered their shortcomings and their idiosyncrasy. It is a representation of many towns in Spain who struggle not only against the crisis but also against oblivion.
Navahermosa was published in Madrid, Spain, in april 2015.

[ESP] La Mancha es una meseta natural del centro de España, que no tiene límites, salvo los históricos e idiosincráticos. Cervantes y otros escritores folcloristas españoles han descrito a sus habitantes, los "manchegos", como inaccesibles y malhumorados; pero Encarna, la mujer que sin pudor se acercó a mí para contarme una historia corta pero triste de la fachada que fotografío, también es manchega y me desconcierta su amabilidad y gentileza. Así, empiezo un periplo de visitas en pueblos de La Mancha e investigo sobre ellos y su historia personalmente, atraída no sólo por la voluntaria y orgullosa discriminación y su reputación de difíciles e inaccesibles, sino también por su desconocida amabilidad y por sus tradiciones. En poco tiempo, entro en sus rutinas y me cuentan historias de sus propias vidas, por lo que me propuse hacer un trabajo fotográfico y un registro de historias sobre mis experiencias con ellos como forastera.
Navahermosa nace después de dos años y medio de trabajo en mi primera incursión en estos pueblos manchegos donde he encontrado enigma, nostalgia e historia pero también donde he descubierto su idiosincrasia y sus carencias. Una representación de muchos pueblos de España que luchan no sólo contra la crisis, sino también contra el olvido.Navahermosa fué publicado en Madrid, España, en abril 2015.
